As part of the monsoon preparedness, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to shift residents from areas where there is a possibility of landslides during heavy rainfall.
The Disaster Management Department has received a list of 15 possible places for landslides in the NMMC area. NMMC Municipal Commissioner, Rajesh Narvekar, who is also the chairman of the Disaster Management Committee, along with other senior civic officials, inspected the sites. As a a precautionary measure before the monsoon arrives, the civic chief directed the residents to move to a suitable place.
Of the total 15 possible landslide locations, four in the Belapur ward and adjoining areas are Durga Mata Nagar, Sambhaji Nagar, sector 8, sector 10, the hill area near Park Hotel, and areas near the Income tax colony are possible landslide locations.
Similarly, in Nerul ward, Ramesh Metal Quarry in Mahatma Gandhi Nagar in MIDC, and Balaji hill area of Sector 20 are possible landslide locations. In Turbhe ward, Hanuman Nagar Hill, MIDC, Katkari Pada, and a couple of in the MIDC also come under the catogory. In the Digha ward, the hill area of Ilgatpada, and Lal Bahadur Shastri School are possible landslide locations.
The civic administration has appealed to citizens to shift to safer places and also advised them to avoid going to these places.
In addition, the civic chief also directed all the ward offices to move the citizens to safe places by keeping a close eye on the stone quarries and places where there is a possibility of landslide in their respective areas. He also closely inspected the ongoing drain cleaning work in Medhkar Quarry area of the Turbhe MIDC area.
Earlier, Narvekar held a meeting with all government authorities and NGOs in Navi Mumbai. He directed the officials to complete the pre-monsoon works within the prescribed time and maintain constant contact with the citizens so that they do not face any kind of problem during the monsoon period.
