Mumbai, April 1: Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Milind Deora has urged the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) to provide Wi-Fi services on the city’s underground Metro Aqua Line (Line 3) until seamless mobile connectivity is enabled across the corridor.
Connectivity concerns raised
In a letter addressed to MMRCL Managing Director Ashwini Bhide, Deora highlighted the absence of mobile network connectivity on several stretches of the Aqua Line, calling it a significant inconvenience for daily commuters.
Describing the Metro Line 3 corridor as a critical addition to Mumbai’s transport infrastructure, Deora noted that the lack of connectivity was impacting productivity in a city regarded as India’s financial and commercial capital. He pointed out that professionals, entrepreneurs, and service providers rely heavily on uninterrupted communication during transit.
“In today’s digital economy, being offline for extended periods directly affects work, coordination and even access to essential services,” Deora said in his communication.
Call for interim and long-term solutions
He further noted that telecom operators have indicated their readiness to expedite solutions, subject to regulatory clearances and coordination among stakeholders. In this context, he urged MMRCL to fast-track the rollout of in-train and underground mobile connectivity.
As an interim measure, Deora recommended the introduction of reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi across stations and tunnels to ensure commuters remain connected throughout their journey.
Commuter experience and infrastructure impact
The Aqua Line, Mumbai’s first fully underground metro corridor, has significantly improved north-south connectivity in the city. However, the lack of network access in underground sections has emerged as a key commuter concern since operations began.
