Mumbai, August 21, 2026: A crane deployed during demolition of an abandoned HDIL building meant to rehabilitate Mumbai airport project-affected slum dwellers collapsed onto railway overhead equipment (OHE) between Kurla and Trombay around 2 am on August 21, injuring 10 people and damaging hutments, vehicles and structures. Following the mishap, MMRDA said it had initiated immediate measures to assist those affected.
Mishap During Demolition
The mishap occurred at the 17-storey building near Qureshi Nagar and Samrat Ashok Nagar while a hydraulic crane was lifting a poklane machine to the upper floors. A portion fell on high-tension railway wires, slum huts, the road, an MHADA compound wall and three to four four-wheelers.
Eight injured – Jagrulla Nabi Moh. Khan, 63; Ahemed Niyaz Ahemed, three months; Atikur Reman, 60; Hakum Sheikh, 36; Numan Khan, 21; Rehman Khan, 19; Suraj Gaur, 10; and Akbar, 40 – were admitted to Sion Hospital. Raju Gaud, 35, and Aarti Gaud, 30, were admitted to Kurla Bhabha Hospital. All were stable.
Penalty On Contractor
MMRDA said medical treatment had been given “the highest priority” and directed contractor M/s Total Construction Pvt Ltd to bear treatment costs and compensate for injuries, damaged hutments and vehicles. It imposed a Rs 25 lakh penalty and said further action would depend on the investigation. “MMRDA remains committed to... fixing accountability for any lapses,” it said.
Rail Services Unaffected
Central Railway said: “No impact on movement as this is primarily a goods line. Responsibility of MMRDA.” Passenger services were unaffected.

Building Found Unsafe
The building was constructed in 2005 by M/s HDIL under an SRA scheme. The G+16 structure, with six wings and around 500 tenements, remained incomplete and unoccupied.
After HDIL’s bankruptcy, SRA handed it to MMRDA on an “as-is-where-is” basis. A 2021 structural audit found it unsafe and unsuitable for habitation, following which MMRDA initiated demolition, which it said had to be undertaken manually.
