Karan’s moving tribute to Raja Ravi Varma

For his big debut night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Karan made everyone stop and stare in a custom Manish Malhotra creation that paid homage to legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma. Instead of a conventional couture look, he donned an ensemble that felt like a living canvas.

The jaw-dropping ensemble, titled 'Framed in Eternity,’ featured a sharply tailored, power-shouldered jacket with a vintage, almost regal structure, giving him a strong, sculpted silhouette. But the real show-stealer was the dramatic cape, a nearly six-foot-long creation that flowed behind him like an artwork in motion.

Every inch of the cape was layered with hand-painted elements inspired by Varma’s iconic motifs, adorning delicate lotuses, ornate pillars, and graceful swans that seemed to come alive as he moved. 

The fabric was painted with a mix of acrylic and oil finishes, then sealed to give it a luminous, painting-like sheen. Even the borders had dimension, crafted with textured embroidery and structured layering that mimicked bold brushstrokes on a canvas. 

This clearly wasn’t a quick couture moment. The ensemble reportedly took over 85 days to complete, with more than 80 artisans working behind the scenes to bring the vision to life, highlighting the very craftsmanship the Met Gala celebrates this year.

Karan kept his styling sharp yet complementary, adding his signature glasses and statement jewellery from Tyaani, including bold rings and a standout necklace that enhanced the look without distracting from its artistic core.
