US President Donald Trump termed the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting in Washington, DC as 'shocking,' adding that he initially mistook the gunfire for a falling object.
While addressing the reporters, Trump said, "I heard a noise and... I thought it was a tray going down. I've heard that many times, and it was a pretty loud noise. It was from quite far away. He hadn't breached the area at all."
He added that the First Lady Melania Trump, quickly recognised the danger when gunfire was heard, recalling her statement, 'That’s a bad noise.' The President also praised the law enforcement agencies for their swift response, stating that the situation was brought under control rapidly.

"All of the law enforcement was really good. It was very quick. There wasn't a lot of time to think because it was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and gone into an area," he said.
Calling the incident 'shocking', the President said he and the First Lady Melania Trump were sitting side by side when gunfire was heard, adding that, "It was so shocking that something like that happened. It's happened to me... That never changes".

Speaking of the event, Trump added that 'we very much wanted to continue' and did not want 'sick people' to change the course of public events and indicated that the dinner would be held again, possibly within the next 30 days.

The suspect behind the shooting scare at the high-profile White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California. President Trump also shared a video showing a man believed to be the suspect, Allen, pinned to the ground by US Secret Service personnel inside the venue moments after the incident. He also shared a picture of the alleged suspect being apprehended.
