A former Iranian foreign minister, Kamal Kharazi, was seriously injured in an airstrike that struck his residence in Tehran earlier this week, according to Iranian media reports. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, also claimed the life of his wife. Authorities have not confirmed whether Kharazi himself was the intended target or if the strike was aimed at another nearby location.
Kharazi, 81, currently heads Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations and has reportedly been involved in facilitating potential direct talks between Iran and the United States. Officials cited in international reports indicated he was helping arrange a possible meeting between Iranian representatives and US Vice President JD Vance.
A veteran diplomat, Kharazi previously served as foreign minister under reformist president Mohammad Khatami and later advised Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on foreign affairs.
