Stockholm, October 8, 2026: Canadian poet, essayist and writer Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for her innovative literary work that draws heavily on classical traditions, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday.

The Academy honoured Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”, Reuters reports.

The prestigious award, presented by the Swedish Academy, carries prize money of 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.2 million).

Anne Carson’s Distinctive Literary Style

Carson is celebrated for her unconventional approach to literature, combining poetry, prose, dialogue and translation to create works that challenge traditional literary categories.

Her writing is deeply influenced by classical Greek literature, which she has extensively translated. Her literary contributions span several forms, including opera libretti, literary criticism and verse novels.

Among her best-known works is Autobiography of Red, published in 1998, which reflects her distinctive approach to storytelling.

Another notable work, Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, released in 2019, blends the story of Helen of Troy from Euripides’ play Helen with that of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. The performance piece illustrates Carson’s ability to reinterpret classical narratives through contemporary cultural figures.

Carson Joins Celebrated Nobel Laureates

With this recognition, Carson joins a distinguished group of Nobel Prize in Literature winners, including Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro and Ernest Hemingway.

However, the literary honour has frequently sparked debate among readers and critics over the Swedish Academy’s selection of winners.

The Academy has faced criticism for overlooking influential literary figures such as Leo Tolstoy, Virginia Woolf and Jorge Luis Borges during the prize’s 120-plus-year history.

It has also been accused of neglecting American writers and selecting relatively obscure literary figures, although its decision to honour US singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in 2016 drew considerable attention.

Debate Over Nobel Literature Selections

Supporters of the Swedish Academy argue that its selections have included both internationally acclaimed authors and lesser-known literary voices.

They point to the recognition of Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez in 1982 and Doris Lessing in 2007 as examples of widely celebrated winners.

Defenders also maintain that the Academy has a responsibility to introduce readers to diverse literary traditions and encourage them to explore works beyond established literary circles.

Nobel Prize’s Literary Legacy

The Nobel Prizes were established through the will of Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite. The awards have recognised achievements in literature, science and peace since 1901.

In 2025, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, whom American critic Susan Sontag described as the “master of the apocalypse”.
