Pune: In a shocking incident, a six-year-old girl and her elderly caretaker were brutally murdered in Alandi late Wednesday night. The crime has sent shockwaves across the town, known as a sacred pilgrimage centre.

The victims have been identified as Dhanshree Sonu Dattatraya Kedari (6) and Mangal Shinde (79). The incident took place at Thakarwadi in the Kelgaon-Hanumanwadi area under the jurisdiction of the Alandi Police Station (under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate). Police said an unidentified person entered the house around midnight and carried out the attack.

According to initial information, Dhanshree’s grandmother, Sangeeta Dattatray Kedari, had gone for her night shift as housekeeping staff at Indrayani Cancer Hospital in Bhosari. The child and the elderly neighbour, who was looking after her, were alone at home.

During the night, the intruder allegedly strangled the child while she was asleep. The attacker also hit Mangal Shinde on the head with a heavy object, killing her on the spot. Both victims died before help could arrive.

The crime came to light on Thursday morning when the complainant, Kedari, returned home and found the bodies lying in a pool of blood. She immediately raised an alarm, after which local residents informed the police.

Alandi Police reached the spot soon after and began an investigation. Officials are trying to determine whether the motive was robbery or a personal dispute. The accused is still at large.

‘No Robbery Attempt’

Speaking to the media, Police Inspector Bhima Narke said, “The motive of the crime is not clear yet. There is no robbery attempt found yet. The door lock was intact. It's possible maybe the victims knew the killer, or they left the door open by mistake while going to sleep.”

PI Narke added, “A case of murder has been registered against an unknown accused. An investigation is underway under the guidance of senior police officials.”

The brutal nature of the crime has triggered anger and fear among residents. Locals have demanded strict action and the quick arrest of those responsible. Police said teams have been formed to trace the suspect, and further investigation is underway.
