Thane, April 1: The Health Department of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has issued a formal order to take punitive action against hotels and local tea stalls (tapris) that continue to use disposable paper cups for serving beverages.

The directive follows a formal complaint lodged by activist Vishal Kurkute. In response, the TMC has issued a circular to the Assistant Commissioners of all ward committees, authorising them to crack down on establishments violating these health and safety regulations.

Health risks and environmental concerns

The municipal corporation’s notice emphasises that the widespread use of paper cups poses a significant risk to public health. The core concerns highlighted in the report include:

Chemical Leaching: Most disposable paper cups are lined with a thin layer of plastic or wax (polyethylene) to make them waterproof. When hot tea or coffee is poured into these cups, the lining can release microplastics and harmful chemicals.

Carcinogenic Risks: The report explicitly mentions that the chemicals used in the manufacturing and lining of these cups may lead to serious long-term health issues, including a potential risk of cancer.

Hygiene Standards: Beyond chemical concerns, the mass production and storage of these cups often bypass stringent sanitary protocols.

Immediate enforcement

The TMC has made it clear that any establishment found violating these norms will face heavy fines. Relevant departments have been instructed to conduct immediate inspections and ensure the strict implementation of the ban.

"The health of our citizens is a top priority. Following the complaints received, we have directed all ward officers to take decisive action against the use of paper cups in commercial food establishments," a representative stated.
