KALYAN : As temperatures continue to soar across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the demand for air-conditioned public transport has witnessed a sharp rise. However in a surprising development the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) has discontinued its AC bus services across the city, causing widespread inconvenience to daily commuters.
The suspension comes after the contract of the private operator running the AC services expired.
As a result services on eight key routes have been completely halted. Among the most popular routes was the stretch from Dombivli Station’s Bajiprabhu Chowk to the MIDC residential area, which saw significant commuter preference.

Passengers have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the sudden discontinuation especially at a time when reliance on AC transport is at its peak.
Notably, the development comes even as KDMT announced the introduction of new air-conditioned e-buses in its latest budget.
Services Suspended from Friday
Authorities have confirmed that the AC bus services across all routes in Kalyan-Dombivli were officially suspended from Friday.
This decision comes despite increasing ridership in AC local trains and similar services in Thane and Navi Mumbai where commuters are actively opting for air-conditioned travel options due to the intense heat.
It has also come to light that the contractor’s agreement had expired nearly eight months ago, raising questions over the delay in administrative action and planning.

On Friday the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation presented a transport budget of approximately ₹226 crore in its general body meeting, announcing the addition of 100 new buses to improve commuter facilities. However, the simultaneous shutdown of existing AC services has triggered public outrage and highlighted a gap between announcements and implementation.
Demand for Immediate Action
Citizens and commuters have urged elected representatives to take swift action and restore the AC bus services at the earliest. Raju Nalawade, a resident of Dombivli MIDC, has called on local corporators to prioritise the issue and ensure that AC transport is made available during the ongoing summer season.
