BMC to build 30 public toilets across city
As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the BMC is mulling upon setting up 30 public toilets across city's prominent places like Churchgate station, Mantralaya, Girgaon Chowpatty, Haji Ali junction, Mulund Check Naka, etc. Adding another layer of convenience, the civic body will also provide the community laundry facility at these toilets.
The civic body had planned to construct around 22,500 public toilet seats under the Swachh Bharat Mission. It had even allocated Rs 300 crore for the project, but the work is yet not completed. According to civic officials, the city lacks around one lakh public toilets.
There are around 1,100 public toilets across the city, which are run by NGOs and local groups. While, these NGOs charge Rs 2-5 for toilet facilities and Rs 10 for a bath, they share revenue with the BMC.

After two-day orange alert, city back to no rainfall warning
Heat and humidity may return soon as IMD predicts a lull in rainfall across Mumbai city and its suburbs. The weather department said that the rainfall will be reducing significantly as low pressure area near Bay of Bengal is weakening.

Thane records 212 new COVID-19 cases; active tally reaches 1,150
As many as 212 new COVID-19 cases have been detected in Maharashtra's Thane district, raising its infection tally to 7,35,817, a health official said on Thursday.
With the addition of the latest cases on Wednesday, the district currently has 1,150 active COVID-19 cases, he said.
The death toll in the district stood at 11,936, while the recovery count has reached 7,23,270 he said.
Central Railway commissions fifth Vistadome coach
After experiencing stellar sucess with Mumbai-Goa and Mumbai-Pune trains with Vistadome coach, the Central Railway has commissioned a fifth one now.
With the Vistadome coaches receiving an overwhelming response, Central Railway (CR) authorities attached a fifth Vistadome coach (on their network) to the PuneSecunderabad-Shatabdi Express on August 10.
MMRDA to raise private, govt funds for big infra projects
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is actively in talks with private and government lending agencies to raise funds for its ongoing big-budget infrastructure and metro projects.
In July, the Maharashtra cabinet, led by CM Eknath Shinde, had allowed the authority to raise a total of Rs 60,000 crore (required additional) for smooth execution of proposed and ongoing infrastructure projects.
The MMRDA is carrying out numerous metro projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) which require exclusively Rs 12,000 crore of the total Rs 60,000 crore.
The remaining amount will be used for the construction of other big budget infrastructure projects that include the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink, Sewri-Worli Connector, the Thane Coastal Road project, and extension of the Eastern Freeway till Thane, among others.
Vihar lake overflows after downpour across city in last 48 hours
Mumbaikars rejoiced a respite from the heat due to downpour over the last 48 hours. The showers caused Vihar lake to overflow.
One of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, Vihar lake's overflowing was fourth incident this year. Earlier, Modak Sagar, Tansa, and Tulsi rivers overflowed due to incessant showers.
The seven lakes supplying water to the city now have 13,55,637 Million litres (ML) or 93.66 per cent of the 14.47 lakh ML of their total capacity. This water stock will be sufficient for 352 days.

BMC illuminates Mumbai's Tansa Dam with Tiranga lights
Tansa, the dam which is one of the sources of drinking water to the people of Mumbai, has been lit with tri-colour lights. Located in the Thane district of the state of Maharashtra in India, the gushing waters when seen in tri-colour gives a vibe of patriotism.
Officials have reported that they have illuminated flowing water of Tansa lake to celebrate 75th year of Independence day. It is a part of Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and will be kept for three days till August 15
Bomb hoax call at Byculla station, caller quizzed
An anonymous bomb threat on early Tuesday morning sparked off a frantic search at the Byculla railway station. Fortunately, nothing suspicious was found. The Government Railway Police (GRP) then traced the caller, who is currently being questioned.
According to GRP officials, the Mumbai police control room received a call at around 1.55 am on Tuesday where the caller told the cops that bombs had been placed at all the four platforms of Byculla station which would go off at 3:50 am.
After an exhaustive search, the GRP officials declared station safe. Subsequently, an offence of giving false information and spreading rumours was registered against unknown persons.

Both Bihar and Maharashtra saw a political crisis this year. Former cm Uddhav Thackeray who is now heading Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana lavished praises on Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for breaking the JD(U) and BJP coalition government.
Thackeray-led Sena, which is grappling with existential crisis, through the editorial also took a dig at CM Eknath Shinde saying he "bent the knee" before Delhi.

Commuters understand how painstaking it is to be stuck in a traffic jam. Motorists in Thane have been struggling with congestions outside schools.
The traffic is bottled because of the school buses parked outside institution's premises and families arriving to pick or drop their children only adds to the traffic menace, motorists lamented.
Despite notifying the issue to the authorities, nothing has been done yet.

A mentally disturbed youth who was resuced and was admitted to the Thane Mental hospital is now recuperating. The youth who identified himself as Raja Thakur celebrated Rakshabandhan with the nurses of hospital. The nurses tied him Rakhi.

Parents worried over hand, foot, mouth disease spread in schools, call for breaking the chain
Schools are almost back to normal, but parents in the city are still worried about hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which is spreading and is particularly harmful to children right now. Doctors across the city claim to be seeing 15-20 cases every day. Parents are raising awareness among others to stop the spread.
This disease, which affects younger children frequently, has several symptoms, including fever, sore throat, runny nose, mouth ulcers, and loss of appetite. Rashes or blisters are frequently found on the hands, foot, forearm, and mouth.
Parents across the city are concerned about the spread and are tackling the problem and say the responsibility lies with them.
