Mumbai: The death of four members of a family in South Mumbai’s Pydhonie has triggered shock and raised serious questions, with police probing whether it was a case of food poisoning, suicide, or foul play. The deceased have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13). All four died during treatment at Sir JJ Hospital.

Deceased identified

According to police, the family had consumed biryani along with relatives on Saturday night at their residence in Mughal Building in Bhendi Bazaar. While nine people had shared the meal, five relatives including Abdullah's two brothers and three kids of them who left later did not report any health issues.

After the relatives departed, Abdullah and his family reportedly consumed leftover watermelon at home before going to sleep. In the early hours, all four began experiencing severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea. A local doctor was called to the house and administered medication, which provided temporary relief. However, their condition soon deteriorated.

Watermelon consumption

As their health worsened, Abdullah informed his brothers, following which the family was rushed to Sir JJ Hospital around 10:30 am on Sunday. Zainab was declared dead before admission, while Nasreen and Ayesha died shortly after. Abdullah succumbed later that night during treatment.

Police from Sir J J Marg Police Station said Abdullah’s statement was recorded before his death, and the sequence of events mentioned by him has been documented as part of the investigation.

An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, and officials are examining all possible angles. Police has collected Watermelon rind and remaining half watermelon, which kept into the refrigerator.

Food poisoning, suicide, or foul play?

Investigators noted that while all nine individuals consumed the biryani, only the four family members fell ill after later eating watermelon. Officials said it is unlikely that fruit alone could cause such severe poisoning leading to death, prompting suspicion over other possibilities.

Police said they are probing whether the incident could involve mass suicide or deliberate poisoning. Reports from doctors, the Food and Drug Administration, and forensic laboratories are awaited to ascertain the exact cause of death. Senior Police Inspector of sir J J Marg Police, Rais Shaikh confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and further clarity will emerge once medical and forensic reports are received. The incident has cast a pall of gloom in the locality, with residents expressing grief over the tragic loss of an entire family.
