Mumbai Rains: Water Storage Levels In Seven Lakes Nears 90%; Heavy Rainfall Continues To Take Over City

Mumbai: The seven lakes vital for the city's water supply are currently full, holding 88.81% of their capacity as of 6:00 AM on July 26, 2025, totaling 1,285,419 million litres. This is a significant increase from 71.02% in 2024 and 58.93% in 2023 for the same date.

The continuous and often heavy monsoon rainfall has been instrumental in this surge. Notably, Modak Sagar dam began overflowing on July 9, followed by Tansa dam on July 23, signifying their full capacity. Bhatsa Dam, a crucial reservoir, also saw its five gates opened by 25 cm on July 25, further indicating its high water levels.

Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna lakes have also seen substantial increases, with Upper Vaitarna releasing water since July 5 and Middle Vaitarna's gates 1 and 5 opened on July 7, contributing to the overall abundance. The Bhandup Complex, a key monitoring station, recorded 132.00 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to July 26, bringing its total monsoon rainfall to 1176.00 mm.

Looking ahead, Mumbai's weather forecast for Sunday, July 27, indicates a continuation of the monsoon activity. The city is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with spells of light rain, and a moderate chance of precipitation (35-40%). Temperatures are predicted to hover around 29 degrees Celsius during the day and 28 degrees Celsius at night, accompanied by winds from the west at approximately 23 mph.

While the heavy downpours of the preceding days might ease slightly, the forecast suggests ongoing wet conditions, ensuring that Mumbai's lakes continue to receive replenishment.
