Mumbai News: 1 Dead, 2 Injured As Speeding Truck Rams Into Vehicles In Chunabhatti; Driver Held While Trying To Flee

Mumbai: In a tragic accident, a speeding truck rammed into several vehicles killing one person, and injuring two others in Mumbai’s Chunabhatti area near Sion on Sunday morning.

According to the Chunabhatti police, the incident happened around 8:40 in the morning, at Eastern Express Highway, near Edward Nagar bus stop. The vehicle, an RCC mixer truck, was going in the direction of Vashi when the driver lost control of the wheels. The vehicle first collided with an activa scooty on which two people were sitting. The one driving, Abdul Salam Sheikh, 38, died instantly given the hit from the truck was intense. The one sitting behind Sheikh, Suraj Sunil Sigwan, 23, fell down and injured himself.

The truck’s speed was so high, that it further rammed into another vehicle, a PUC Van, which had a man named Abdul Wahid Siddiqui, 30, sitting inside. Siddiqui too was severely injured and was taken to Sion Hospital by the police, along with Sigwan, to receive treatment.

The truck further crashed into the road barriers, damaging the road and two other bikes which were parked on the side.

The driver of the mixer truck is identified as Riyan Mohammad Ali, 29, who also sustained injuries during the accident. Police added that the driver, seeing the accident, tried to run away from the spot. However, given how he had injured himself too, he couldn’t run far. Police managed to get hold of him, sent him to Sion Hospital for treatment, and then arrested him on Sunday evening.

A case has been registered against Ali under sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), among others of the Indian Penal Code, and sections 184 (driving dangerously), 134 (a) (not taking reasonable steps to secure medical attention for the injured person), 134 (b) (not reporting the circumstances of the occurrence (accident) to a police officer or a police station), of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Meanwhile, in the western suburbs, another accident was reported on Juhu Tara Road where a car rammed into two auto-rickshaws. However, no casualties were reported but the said car was severely damaged. No arrests have been made in the matter, said the police.
