Mumbai: One person was killed and three others injured when a large concrete slab from Mumbai Metro Line 4 collapsed onto vehicles on LBS Marg in Mulund West near the Johnson & Johnson and Oberoi premises on Saturday.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 pm. The slab reportedly fell directly onto cars and an autorickshaw passing below. An auto driver and a woman were reported to be trapped under the debris, leading an immediate emergency response.

Videos from the crash site show harrowing visuals of the crushed car and the auto. The rickshaw driver, in a bloodied state, can be seen being pulled out from below the slab.

Fire brigade teams, police personnel, metro officials, ward staff and 108 ambulance service responders rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities reported that one of the injured persons is in critical condition, while the other two are undergoing treatment.

Ramdhan Yadav was declared brought dead. The other injured have been identified as Rajkumar Yadav (45), who is reported to be in critical condition, and Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52) and Deepa Ruhiya (40), both of whom are admitted and stated to be in stable condition.

Authorities cordoned off the area, while traffic on the busy LBS Road stretch was disrupted for some time. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained, and a detailed inquiry is expected.

MMRDA Issues Statement

In a statement posted on X, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said the incident occurred around 12.15 pm near Pier P196 of the Metro Line construction works in the Rajiv (Milan) stretch, close to the Mulund Fire Station, where a portion of a parapet segment fell from height and struck a passing autorickshaw.

MMRDA confirmed that two individuals sustained injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where their condition is being monitored. The metro project team is at the site and is carrying out relief operations and securing the area in close coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and disaster management authorities.

MMRDA Constitutes A High-Level Committee

The MMRDA has constituted a high-level inquiry committee, headed by Shri Basavraj M. Bhadragond, Director (Metro PIU), MMRDA, to investigate the collapse of a portion of the parapet near Pier 196, close to the Mulund Fire Station, along the under-construction Metro Line 4 project.

"We deeply regret this tragic incident and extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Financial assistance will be offered as per MMRDA's compensation policy to the kin of the deceased. All medical expenses of the injured will be fully borne by the MMRDA."
