Mira Bhayandar: A 65-year-old pensioner from Bhayandar was duped of Rs46,000 by an unidentified man who replaced his debit card while pretending to help him with cash withdrawal at an ATM kiosk. The fraud was reported from the ATM kiosk of a reputed multinational bank in the New Golden Nest area of Bhayandar East.

In his police complaint, senior citizen Binodkumar Jha said that the cheat posing as a customer-in queue stepped in to help him after he encountered glitches in the withdrawal. The suspect kept observing the PIN that Mr Jha was entering in the system after punching the card.

Suspect swiped the card by entering the memorized PIN

The crook then hurriedly left the booth, but not before replacing the debit card with a swift sleight of hand. The suspect swiped the card by entering the memorized PIN and siphoned off Rs46,000 in three ATM transactions.

Shocked at receiving text messages about the withdrawals from the bank, Mr Jha immediately approached the Navghar police station and lodged a complaint. An offence under the Indian Penal Code section 420 (cheating) has been registered against the unidentified suspect, said the police while appealing people not to entertain strangers while carrying out transactions at ATM kiosks.
