Mumbai: Maharashtra has once again demonstrated its strength in the fisheries sector, securing the second position in fish exports across India. This achievement comes under the leadership of Fisheries Development Minister Nitesh Rane, whose focused efforts have significantly boosted the sector.
State Exports Marine Products Worth ₹7,343 Crore in 2024–25
According to a central government report, the state exported marine products worth ₹7,343.40 crore in the financial year 2024–25. This marks a remarkable rise compared to ₹3,684 crore in 2020–21, effectively doubling exports over five years. Export volume has also surged, reaching 2.27 lakh metric tonnes annually.
The Konkan coast has emerged as the backbone of this success, with shrimp and frozen fish contributing a major share. In particular, Konkan shrimp has witnessed growing demand in global markets such as the United States and China, gaining popularity for its superior quality and taste.
Minister Rane has played a key role in modernizing the fisheries sector by promoting advanced technology, strengthening infrastructure, and enhancing export capabilities. His initiatives have helped fishermen from coastal regions directly connect with international markets.
US Remains India's Largest Marine Export Destination at ₹22,723 Crore
At the national level, the United States remains India’s largest export destination for marine products, accounting for ₹22,723 crore in 2024–25. It is followed by China (₹10,668 crore), along with strong demand from the European Union, Southeast Asia, and Japan.
Despite challenges such as global market fluctuations and rising production costs, Maharashtra has maintained its competitive edge alongside leading states like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
Overall, strategic policymaking and the relentless efforts of Konkan’s fishing community have propelled Maharashtra’s seafood exports to new heights, contributing significantly to the state’s economic growth.
