Maharashtra Plans Solar-Powered Passenger Boats For Safer, Cleaner Water Transport

Mumbai, August 24, 2026: Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has directed officials to promote the use of modern, solar-powered passenger boats to make water transport in the state more comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly.

Rane issued the directions during a meeting held at Mantralaya on Sunday, where Navalt Boats made a presentation on modern passenger boats based on solar energy and other advanced technologies. He stressed the need to reduce dependence on conventional fuels and explore clean-energy alternatives for water transport.

The use of solar-powered boats is expected to reduce dependence on traditional fuels and contribute to making water transport more environmentally sustainable. The technology will also help provide passengers with safer and more comfortable journeys.

Modern Boats Proposed For Routes

The meeting discussed the deployment of a 49-passenger speedboat for the Versova-Madh–Ro-Ro service and a 20-passenger boat for the Gateway of India–Alibaug-Mandwa route. The possibility of introducing modern boats for water transport between Mumbai and Sindhudurg was also discussed.

Rane directed the Maharashtra Maritime Board and the Ports Department to prepare a proposal for expanding passenger water transport services through modern boats while also exploring opportunities to increase revenue.

He called for the effective utilisation of the state's existing waterways and strengthening passenger ferry services. The integration of modern solar technology, clean energy and safety measures is expected to play an important role in strengthening Maharashtra's water transport network.

Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer P. Pradeep and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
