Former Maharashtra CM Manohar Joshi Passes Away At 86

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi passed away at 3am on Friday at the P D Hinduja Hospital, a day after being hospitalised following a cardiac arrest. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and was kept under observation. Joshi had turned 86 last year on December 2.

On December 2, Joshi's 86th birthday, he was brought to his Dadar office, where supporters gathered to commemorate the occasion, showing his enduring influence and political legacy.

Joshi's Deteriorating Health

According to sources, Joshi had age-related health complications due to which last year in May also he was admitted to the same Hinduja Hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

The last rites will be carried out at Shivaji Park crematorium. The mortal remains will be kept at his Matunga house from 11 am to 2 pm to allow people pay their last respects.

Born on December 2, 1937, in Mahad, Maharashtra, Joshi obtained his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai.

Joshi's Political Career

Joshi's political journey began with his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), later transitioning into a pivotal role within the Shiv Sena. His rise in the 1980s emphasized his organisational prowess and grassroots connections.

Manohar Joshi served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 under the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition. He was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004. The senior Shiv Sena leader began his career as a teacher and entered politics in 1967. The veteran leader had been away from active politics for some time now.

Joshi was one of the trusted confidants of Balasaheb Thackeray. His political journey began when he successfully secured a seat as a councillor in the Maharashtra Legislative Council under the Shiv Sena banner. Furthermore, Joshi served as the Mayor of Mumbai between 1976–1977.
