Bombay HC Indicates Bail For Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre In Dombivli Doctors Assault Case Under Stringent Conditions

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday indicated that it will grant bail to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who is accused of assaulting three doctors while they were on duty at the KDMC-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli.

According to a report by Live Law, a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad observed that the investigation in the case is almost complete and that the chargesheet is likely to be filed within the next 15 days.

Court weighs bail conditions

The development comes days after Mhatre surrendered before the Vishnu Nagar Police after the Bombay High Court cancelled the bail granted to him in connection with the alleged assault on doctors at the municipal hospital in Dombivli.

Mhatre is accused of assaulting the three doctors, including a woman doctor. The incident sparked widespread condemnation from the medical fraternity and triggered protests by doctors across Maharashtra.

During the hearing, the bench observed that Mhatre could not be kept in custody indefinitely, echoing submissions made by Senior Advocate Ashok Mundargi, who is assisting the court in the matter.

Stringent conditions proposed

The bench further indicated that it would impose stringent bail conditions, including directing Mhatre to stay outside Maharashtra at least until the prosecution files the chargesheet.

The report further stated that Mhatre would be required to report to the local police station three times a week at the place where he proposes to stay outside Maharashtra.

The High Court also directed the State to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor in the case at the earliest.
