Struggling To Sleep? Try These Ayurvedic Habits For Better Rest
Quality sleep is essential for overall well-being. Ayurveda recommends simple bedtime rituals, mindful habits, calming herbs and a balanced routine to improve sleep naturally, reduce stress and help you wake up refreshed every morning.

The moment you wake up from a good sleep, your mind and body feel fresh and energetic. But there is a method to sleeping well for maximum benefits. Acharya Balkrishnaji, the co-founder of Patanjali Ayurved, speaks about Ayurvedic ways to get good sleep along with the Patanjali products perfect for that.
Issues Around Sleep
Lack of sleep or nidrasana is caused due to Vata Dosha imbalance, leading to a restive and overcharged mind. It becomes chronic when you sleep less than seven to eight hours and weakens cognitive, heart, emotional functions, immunity, and metabolic hormones.
In India, there is a noticeable ‘silent epidemic’ of sleep deficiency with over 61% Indians sleeping for less than six hours. The reasons include inconsistent schedules, a rise in stress levels, and the impact of climate-related temperatures.
Acharya Balkrishnaji mentions good ayurvedic tips to manage sleep trouble along with the right Patanjali products to work on them.
6 Ayurvedic Tips to Get Good Sleep
Keep Lights Off: Acharya Balkrishnaji suggests, “Many people actually fall asleep with the lights on. Instead, turn the lights off completely so that your sleeping area is free of light. Let go of fear, anxiety, sorrow, and anger, and enter a state of rest.”
Wake Up Early: Acharya Balkrishnaji calls rising up early essential. “The night is dominated by Tamas (darkness), which promotes deep sleep. Rising early aligns with the period when Vata and Kapha are dominant, thus facilitating proper bowel movements. Vata governs movement while Kapha provides lubrication or unctuousness; the combination of Vata’s movement and the lubricating quality of Kapha aids in the smooth elimination of waste.” He feels a calm body in the morning means a happy mind. Such a mind promotes physical vitality, freshness, joy and enthusiasm, which is enhanced during this time of day.
Meditative Efforts: “If sleep eludes you, try humming a mantra, a bhajan, or a shloka that you find pleasing, and reflect upon it. If that doesn’t work, lie down flat on your back and begin to observe your breath. If you continue this practice, you will drift into a sound sleep,” suggests Acharya Balkrishnaji.
Sleep and Overexertion: If someone works excessively during the day beyond their body’s capacity and leads to severe aches and fatigue, they too struggle to sleep. Acharya Balkrishnaji reveals, “Therefore, while physical exertion is essential, one must not overdo it. If you have overexerted, warm some oil and gently massage your body. Later, wipe off the excess oil. If you go to sleep after doing this, you will certainly fall asleep easily.”
Struggle with Location Change: At times, changed locations can unnerve people. So, place an item of regularly used clothing near the head of the bed. “Simply having a personal item placed near your head ensures you sleep well, as the familiar scent helps you drift off,” says Acharya Balkrisnaji.
Ayurvedic Tips: Herbs and spices such as ashwagandha, brahmi, jatamansi, nutmeg, cumin, and tagara calm the nervous system, cool the body, deal with Dosha-related cognitive troubles, and help you fall asleep. Stop digital screens at least an hour or two before sleep. Your last meal should be two to three hours before heading to bed. If slightly hungry, have a warm glass of turmeric milk.
