Miss Universe India 2026 Embraces Manipur’s Sporting Heritage With A Unique Costume Design; Take A Look!

After Assam's Anshulaa Baruah showcased the state's rich natural heritage with a Kaziranga-inspired national costume, another costume from North East stole the spotlight in Miss Universe 2026. This time, Manipur’s cultural heritage took centre stage at the pageant happening in Jaipur on August 20, with the state’s traditional costume showcasing its textiles, craftsmanship and cultural diversity.

Manipur takes centre stage

Manipur's cultural heritage took centre stage at the Miss Universe India 2026 pageant in Jaipur on August 20. The unique design celebrates the northeastern state’s deep-rooted connection with sports while highlighting its vibrant traditions and identity. The costume was designed by Manipuri fashion designer Robert Naorem and it features Manipur's association with polo, which is locally known as kangjei.

The costume featured traditional tribal motifs, handcrafted textiles and sarong-inspired drapes. Textiles associated with the Tangkhul and Kabui communities have also been incorporated, reflecting the cultural traditions shared across Manipur. Manipur's identity was represented by Thadoi Yumnam in ongoing Miss Universe India.

From producing celebrated athletes to nurturing traditional sports, the state has made a significant contribution to the country’s sporting legacy. The costume seeks to bring this lesser-known aspect of Manipur’s cultural identity into the spotlight.

The outfit combines elements inspired by Manipur’s sporting traditions with intricate craftsmanship, creating a look that is both contemporary and rooted in heritage. Its design reflects the strength, discipline and determination associated with athletes, while also incorporating visual details drawn from the state’s rich cultural aesthetics.

Thadoi Yumnam crowned Miss Universe Manipur

Thadoi Yumnam was crowned Miss Universe Manipur 2026 at the grand finale of the state pageant held at Chandrakrit Auditorium in Imphal on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The event featured 20 finalists from across Manipur, who competed in many rounds which were designed to assess confidence, leadership and personal advocacy.

The event was held in Imphal and organised under the direction of renowned fashion designer and State Director Robert Naorem. It was conducted in collaboration with the Manipur AIDS Control Society and For Better Kangleipak. Among the distinguished guests were Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the First Lady, who attended in a private capacity.
