From Toothaches To Bleeding Gums: Ayurvedic Solutions For Better Oral Health
Acharya Balkrishnaji, the co-founder of Patanjali Ayurved, suggests traditional solutions for long-term dental complaints.

Oral health is often overlooked until a problem becomes difficult to ignore. While modern dentistry offers several treatment options, many people struggling with recurring dental issues continue to search for long-term, holistic solutions. In this pursuit, Ayurveda remains an often-overlooked yet time-tested approach that focuses on addressing the root cause of ailments rather than merely managing symptoms. Acharya Balkrishnaji, co-founder of Patanjali Ayurveda, discusses common dental troubles and related Ayurvedic remedies, along with Patanjali dental products.
The Modern-Day Dental Issues
Ayurveda considers the root causes of dental issues to be dosha imbalances, toxin buildup, dependence on processed and sugary food, lifestyle choices, and stress.
Indians are facing quite a few dental issues due to a lack of knowledge about oral hygiene, a processed and sugar-rich diet, and high use of tobacco. Tooth decay is a prominent issue among these, with almost 80 to 90% of Indians of all ages being afflicted.
Another issue includes gum diseases such as bleeding gums (gingivitis); high tissue loss (periodontitis, chronic, aggressive, and necrotising types); and pyorrhoea. Due to enamel loss and gum disease, many people experience issues such as tooth sensitivity and tooth loss. In fact, around 35% of adult Indians deal with partial or complete loss of teeth aggravated by a lack of care.
While many in semi-rural and rural India deal with dental fluorosis due to high amounts of fluoride in groundwater, the country is also a major centre for patients suffering from oral cancer caused by high consumption of tobacco in various ways.
The solutions to these troubles lie in Ayurvedic remedies, says Acharya Balkrishnaji. Here are some simple remedies along with Patanjali dental products, perfect for oral health.
4 Ayurvedic Remedies for Dental Troubles
Pyorrhoea, Bad Breath and Dental Health: Acharya Balkrishnaji suggests mixing turmeric, salt and sesame oil to form a paste. “Massage the paste all over your teeth and gums for around five minutes. Leave it on for a few more minutes and then gently spit it out. You can then slowly rinse your mouth. Those suffering from pyorrhoea can repeat this process two to three times a day. It is also highly beneficial for bad breath and overall dental health.” For persistent bad breath, using a mint mouthwash can also be helpful.
Toothache: For temporary relief, place a small clove against the affected tooth until the pain subsides, or apply a drop or two of clove oil to the area. Clove contains natural eugenol, which helps numb the affected area and combat infections. Another remedy is a mixture of crushed garlic and salt, as garlic possesses antibacterial properties that may help address the underlying infection. Oil pulling is also believed to help reduce oral bacteria and support overall oral health.
Gum Issues: To manage bleeding gums and plaque buildup, add triphala powder to warm water and gargle two to three times a day. Triphala's astringent and antimicrobial properties may help reduce plaque and control bleeding. Alternatively, gently rubbing babool bark powder on the teeth can help soothe inflammation and strengthen the gums. Chewing neem twigs is another traditional remedy that supports gum health, cleans teeth and may help reduce infections and decay.
Tooth Sensitivity: Guava leaves are considered natural pain relievers. Boil a few leaves in water, allow the solution to cool, and use it as a mouthwash. Regular rinsing with warm salt water can also act as a natural disinfectant, helping reduce inflammation and ease sensitivity.
