CatalyseR, Unacademy Among 21 Coaching Centres SEALED! 14 Other Commercial Establishments Also Shut

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A day after 15 students were killed in a major fire at a coaching institute in Lucknow, the district administration and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) launched a major crackdown on violations of fire safety norms, sealing as many as 21 coaching centres and libraries and 14 other commercial establishments during a day-long enforcement drive in the city.

The inspection drive began at CatalyseR Coaching Centre, where officials found serious lapses in fire safety arrangements. Despite accommodating a large number of students, the institute lacked essential firefighting equipment and adequate emergency preparedness, prompting immediate action.

A team led by SDM Ghanshyam Dhangar later inspected Resonance Coaching Centre. Officials said the institute had been served a notice nearly three months ago to rectify deficiencies but failed to comply within the stipulated period, resulting in departmental action.

Ramanujan Coaching Centre was sealed for failing to install mandatory fire safety equipment despite receiving notices. An illegally operated auto service centre functioning from a basement was also shut down. At Medicos Career Institute, the building was found to be in a dilapidated condition and lacked basic fire safety infrastructure, prompting authorities to seal the premises in the interest of student safety.

According to SDM Dhangar, inspections conducted throughout the day in the Bhanwarkuan and Geeta Bhawan areas uncovered serious irregularities in several establishments, all of which were sealed. He said the administration would continue such drives to prevent incidents similar to the Lucknow tragedy.

Collector Shivam Verma said the administration would not tolerate any negligence in implementing government safety directives. Municipal commissioner Kshitij Singhal added that a special campaign is underway to clear pending cases and take strict action against those responsible for violations.

The drive also targeted restaurants and other commercial establishments. At Makhanwala Rasoi Restaurant, officials found that no fire audit had been conducted despite prior notices. Inspectors also discovered a large quantity of coal stored near an active furnace, posing a significant fire hazard, following which action was initiated.

Joint teams of the district administration and IMC have been conducting inspections of large buildings, coaching institutes and commercial establishments across the city. So far, more than 135 buildings have been sealed for failing to comply with prescribed fire safety norms.

A separate inspection campaign led by SDM Dhangar in the Juni Indore subdivision covered coaching centres, libraries, hotels and commercial establishments. The joint team, comprising revenue officials, fire safety officers and municipal corporation staff, inspected several premises.
