Kolkata, August 22, 2026: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya on Saturday slammed Sharmila Tagore over her remarks on ‘Vande Mataram’, referring to the naming of a member of her family after Taimur.

“Sharmila Tagore’s family had named their descendants after the foreign invader and cruel temple-looter Taimur. Taimur had also forced people to change religion and also raped several women. Hence, it is natural for her to object to singing the full song of Vande Mataram. She should not speak about Vande Mataram,” said Bhattacharya.
