Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has met with TVK chief Vijay for the fourth time to stake claim to power since the election results on May 4.

With the support of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, 120 MLAs are now backing TVK, and its path to forming a government in the state is now clear, as the magic number stands at 118.

How did the deadlock over numbers end?

The deadlock over majority support among MLAs ended after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the next government.

IUML says still in DMK alliance

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has said it remains part of the DMK-led alliance and extended its support so that a government could be formed in the state.

“There is no change. The Indian Union Muslim League Tamil Nadu State Committee is still in the DMK-led alliance. We have supported the TVK to form a government... Without our support, they can't form the government. We have to support democratic values in Tamil Nadu... We discussed this with them (DMK),” IUML leader KAM Muhammed Abubacker was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
