Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin was seen on the verge of tears after his defeat on May 4 from the Kolathur seat to TVK candidate V. S. Babu. Kolathur, which was Stalin’s stronghold, witnessed a three-cornered contest involving TVK and AIADMK’s P. Santhana Krishnan. Videos of the Chief Minister getting emotional are doing the rounds on the internet.

After three decades, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin suffered a defeat in his Kolathur Assembly constituency on Monday, becoming the fourth sitting Chief Minister in the state to lose an election. In a striking twist, he was defeated by former DMK legislator V. S. Babu, who had recently joined actor Vijay’s TVK.

Babu, once the district secretary of the DMK in Chennai, had left the party after being removed from his post and later joined the AIADMK before switching to TVK just ahead of the elections. Only two days before the vote, he had publicly hinted that Stalin would face defeat in his own stronghold. What many dismissed at the time turned into reality on Monday, as Babu went on to win the seat by over 9,300 votes in a constituency Stalin had represented since 2011.

Who is V.S. Babu?

V.S. Babu, 75, is a veteran politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). He was elected from the Purasawalkam constituency in 2006 as a DMK candidate and served as MLA until 2011.

A seasoned party leader, he also held the post of DMK North Chennai district secretary and was in charge of Kolathur during the 2011 elections. However, following the poll results and a narrow win for M.K. Stalin, he reportedly raised concerns with the party leadership. Soon after, he fell out of favour and was replaced as district secretary by P.K. Sekhar Babu.

In a later political shift, Babu joined actor Vijay’s TVK on February 7, 2026. As per his 2026 election affidavit, he has declared assets worth ₹3.7 crore.
