Morbi: An 18-foot-deep well in a remote village of Gujarat’s Morbi district has become the centre of widespread curiosity after it began continuously generating unexplained waves and ripples.
While the unusual phenomenon has sparked curiosity, officials confirmed that no seismic activity has been recorded in the area to account for the dramatic water movement. They said that air escaping through gaps in the rocks might be the reason behind the waves.
Villagers, passersby and people travelling along the highway gathered in large numbers at the site to witness the strange activity.
The phenomenon, observed over the past five days, has left onlookers puzzled and sparked fears of possible seismic activity.
However, District Geologist J S Vadher said that the waves were unlikely to be linked to seismic activity.
“This is not a seismic activity. Prima facie, it appears that following heavy upstream rainfall, groundwater is recharging and air trapped in the pore spaces of rocks is being released, causing the disturbance in the well,” Vadher said on Thursday.
He added that officials had consulted the Institute of Seismological Research in Gandhinagar, which confirmed that there is no active fault line in the area.
Morbi District Collector Swapnil Khare said a team from Gandhinagar will probe the curious occurrence.
“We have informed the Gujarat government about it, and a team from Gandhinagar will visit the site for further investigation,” he said.
The owner of the farm where the well is located, Pranjivan Sadariya, said he first noticed the unusual activity on August 2.
“When I arrived at my farm on Sunday, water from the well was spilling over the edge, and the same thing has continued ever since,” he said.
Sadariya added that the well was constructed about three months ago.
