A GRP personnel lost both his legs in a train accident on Tuesday night at UP's Gonda railway station while chasing a man accused of theft. A disturbing visual from the scene has emerged showing the GRP personnel lying in a pool of blood at the platform.

According to reports, the incident took place around 12 am on Tuesday when GRP personnel Akash Singh, 29, was chasing Sunil Kumar, 35. Despite both his legs being severed in the incident, Akash Singh managed to grab the accused. After the incident, the public, police, and other GRP personnel arrived at the scene after hearing the screams and nabbed the accused.

Injured GRP personnel Akash Singh, who hails from Mau district, was rushed to Gonda Medical College, from where he was referred to Lucknow Trauma Center after primary treatment. The condition of Akash is said to be critical.

According to reports, a scuffle broke out between two youths at platform number one of the Gonda Railway Station. One of the youths, Sunil Kumar, was accused of stealing money from the pocket of another man. Seeing them fight, Akash reached the scene to intervene.

He took both the youths outside the GRP station. After questioning both, he released one of the youths and kept Sunil under detention.

After some time, the Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express, headed towards Lucknow, arrived at platform one. During this time, Sunil Kumar suddenly freed his hand from constable Akash and attempted to escape by boarding the moving train. Akash immediately chased after him.

Akash managed to grab Sunil from behind as he was climbing onto the train and pulled him back. Amid the chaos on the moving train, Akash Singh slipped into the gap between the train and the platform. His legs were severed.

Both of the constable’s legs were cut. One leg was completely severed, while the other was left hanging by skin.

The fleeing accused was caught and dragged onto the platform. The GRP station was just 50 meters away from the spot where the incident occurred. Hearing the commotion, police personnel and nearby people rushed to the scene. The train was stopped, and the injured constable was pulled out. The accused, Sunil Kumar, was also apprehended and was found injured. He has been admitted to the district hospital.

Doctors said it would be difficult to reattach the constable’s legs. Dr Atul Mishra of Gonda Medical College stated that due to the severe damage, reattachment is unlikely. An artificial (prosthetic) leg may have to be fitted. Parts of the leg are also missing. Fellow GRP personnel had brought some parts of the severed limb, but due to his critical condition, he was referred to Lucknow.

GRP in-charge Dinesh Kumar Pandey said that the accused has been arrested and admitted to the district hospital, while the constable has been referred to Lucknow for further treatment. CCTV footage is being examined, and an investigation is underway.
