New Delhi, August 6, 2026: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recorded 59 suicides in 2025, its highest annual figure in five years, with more than 80 per cent of those who died belonging to the constabulary, official sources said on Thursday.

Official data showed that 262 CRPF personnel died by suicide between 2021 and 2025. Of them, 202, or more than 77 per cent, died while on duty, while the remaining cases occurred when personnel were on leave.

Home Issues, Duty Stress Cited

While the CRPF did not issue an official response, officials told PTI that the force had introduced several measures to safeguard the physical and mental health of its personnel and that these efforts were continuing.

"It has been largely found that maximum suicide cases are linked to issues at home, coupled with the rigours of service and demanding duties," the officials said.

The CRPF, India's largest paramilitary force, has around 3.25 lakh personnel and serves as the country's lead internal security force. Officials said about 95-97 per cent of its operational strength is deployed at any given time for counter-insurgency, anti-terror operations and law-and-order duties.

Five-Year Data

The CRPF recorded 59 suicides in 2025, compared with 46 in 2024, 57 in 2023, 43 in 2022 and 57 in 2021.

Including 19 cases reported till July 2026, 281 personnel have died by suicide since 2021. Of them, 237 were non-gazetted personnel, 43 were subordinate officers and one was a gazetted officer. Non-gazetted personnel accounted for nearly 84 per cent of the total.

Non-gazetted ranks comprise constables and head constables, while subordinate officers include inspectors, sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors. Officers of the rank of assistant commandant and above are gazetted officers.
