Atiq Ahmed's Son Aban Ahmed Dies In Jhansi Road Accident While Travelling To Meet Brother In Jail

Lucknow: Aban Ahmed, the youngest son of slain gangster-politician and former MP Atiq Ahmed, was killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district on Thursday while travelling to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmed, who is lodged in Jhansi jail. Another occupant of the vehicle also died, while three others sustained serious injuries.

The accident took place on the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway in the Poonch police station area. According to police, all five occupants were travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet Ali Ahmed, who has been lodged in the high-security Jhansi jail since October 2025.

Police said the accident occurred around 10.30 am near Khilli village when a speeding Hyundai Creta allegedly went out of control after the driver attempted to avoid an animal that suddenly came onto the highway. The vehicle rammed into the road divider, leaving its front portion completely mangled.

Aban Ahmed and Sonu Khan, who were seated in the front, suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. The three injured have been identified as Ahjam of Badshahi Mandi, Mohammad Zaid of Kotwali and Umar Ahmed of Pura Mufti, all residents of Prayagraj. They were rushed to the Jhansi Medical College for treatment.

Senior Superintendent of Police B B G T S Murthy said the preliminary investigation identified one of the deceased as Aban Ahmed, son of Atiq Ahmed. He said further legal proceedings were underway.

Police said they recovered a wedding invitation card from the damaged vehicle. The card carried the name of Mohammad Zaid, which helped officers contact family members and establish the identities of the occupants. Three mobile phones were also recovered from the car and taken into police custody.

Eyewitnesses told police that the injured passengers repeatedly asked, "Bhai kaise hain?" apparently referring to one of their companions, but were not in a condition to provide any further details.

Ali Ahmed, another son of Atiq Ahmed, was shifted from Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj to the high-security Jhansi jail on October 1, 2025. The transfer followed the recovery of Rs 1,100 from his barrack during a jail search. At the time of his transfer, Ali had claimed that his life was under threat and sought protection from the Uttar Pradesh government.

The latest accident comes more than three years after the death of Atiq Ahmed's son Asad Ahmed, who was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force near Jhansi on April 13, 2023. Asad, wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh. He and his associate Ghulam were killed after allegedly opening fire on the STF during the operation.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead by three assailants while in police custody in Prayagraj on April 15, 2023, in one of the state's most high-profile criminal cases.
