Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Tuesday released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, announcing nominees for 12 constituencies. Party chief Badruddin Ajmal will contest from the Binnakandi constituency.
Ajmal's Direct Entry Marks Party's Focus
Ajmal’s candidature from Binnakandi marks his direct entry into the electoral contest as the party prepares for the Assembly polls scheduled for April. The AIUDF leadership said the selection of candidates reflects its focus on constituencies where the party has a presence, particularly in minority-dominated areas.
Apart from Ajmal, the party has nominated Hafiz Bashir Ahmed from Goalpara East, Nazrul Hoque from Dhubri, Mazibur Rahman from Dalgaon, Ashraful Hussain from Chenga, Abdul Aziz from Samaguri, Shihab Uddin from Karimganj South, Imdad Hussain from Chamaria, Jamsher Talukdar from Golakganj, Musukha Basumatary from Bijni, Mukut Das from Raha and Anup Kumar Talukdar from Ramkrishna Nagar.
First List Had Nine Candidates Including MLAs
The announcement follows the party’s first list released on March 9, in which it named nine candidates. That list included three sitting MLAs — Nizanur Rahman from Gauripur, Aminul Islam, who was shifted to Rupahihat, and Rafiqul Islam from Mandia. The initial list also featured two women candidates.
With the latest announcement, AIUDF has now declared candidates for 21 constituencies in total. Party sources said more candidates are likely to be announced in the coming days as the party plans to contest between 28 and 32 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

The party leadership has ruled out any formal pre-poll alliances but indicated that it may consider supporting a post-poll coalition of opposition parties opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party if required.
AIUDF leaders said the party will focus its campaign in Lower Assam, the Barak Valley and parts of central Assam, regions where it has traditionally drawn support.
The candidate announcements come amid increased political activity following the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India, with parties finalising nominees and preparing for the campaign ahead of the Assembly polls.
