The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new postgraduate programme — Master of Science (MSc) in Home Science with specialisation in Community Development and Extension Management. This is IGNOU's first master's programme in the subject of Home Science. Interested candidates can apply online through the official IGNOU Samarth Portal at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.
Programme Objective and Mode
The program, presented by the School of Continuing Education, is directed towards those who are interested in working for initiatives related to community welfare in the areas of health, education, gender equity, employment, and social transformation. It will be available in English through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode and is intended to offer theoretical insights as well as practical field experience.
What Students Will Learn
Along the way, students will be given hands-on skills in the fields of development communication, behavior change tactics, advocacy, resource mobilisation, gender mainstreaming, maternal and child health, and multidisciplinary methods in home science.
Who Can Apply
Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree in home science, community sciences, social sciences, behavioural sciences, pure sciences, or any other approved field. The course welcomes students from various academic backgrounds.
Course Structure and Subjects
The duration of the course is two years and 80 credits need to be completed by the students.
First Year:
Students will learn disciplines such as development theory, community organisation, media and development, and ICT tools. They will also pursue a field practice project and electives like gender studies or rural development.
Second Year:
The second year deals with subjects such as training and development, maternal and child health, social behaviour, and research methodology. A research project is also included in the syllabus.
Fees
The entire fee will Rs 7,000 annually, including registration and development fees.

Students graduating from this programme will be eligible to pursue careers in different fields, such as project officers in government programmes, professionals with NGOs, CSR experts, or for international development agencies. The course also provides career avenues in education, research, healthcare, agriculture, and rural development.
