Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): An encroachment removal drive by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) near the mosque at Bhadbhada Square was halted on Thursday after facing strong resistance from locals and political leaders.
The BMC team had reached the site to remove shops built within the Full Tank Level (FTL) zone of the Upper Lake, in compliance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders.
Officials said one shop had already been vacated when Congress leader P C Sharma arrived at the spot and opposed the action. Following the protest, the municipal team withdrew.
Authorities have identified around 35 encroachments within a 50-metre radius of the lake’s FTL, an area where construction is prohibited. The NGT had issued orders nearly a year ago to clear these encroachments.
Earlier in January, a joint team of the district administration and the municipal corporation had initiated action. While nine families vacated their homes without resistance, 24 others opposed the move, claiming the land belongs to the Waqf Board and stating their intention to approach the court. At the time, authorities had given them three months to respond.

Next action on Monday
BMC’s anti-encroachment officer Shailendra Singh Bhadauria said the drive will resume on Monday after necessary preparations are completed.
