India’s first Road Train was officially flagged off in Nagpur by the Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on February 15, 2025. Developed by Volvo Trucks and operated by Delhivery Ltd., this innovative solution is set to transform long-haul transportation by increasing efficiency and cargo capacity.

The Road Train concept, which allows extended vehicle lengths of up to 25.25 meters, was incorporated into regulations in 2020. Featuring a tractor unit towing multiple trailers, this system is designed to optimize logistics operations and improve freight movement across the country.

The Volvo FM 420 4X2 Road Train is set to redefine freight transportation with its high-capacity design and cutting-edge safety features. This advanced vehicle, consisting of a 24-ft intermediate trailer and a 44-ft semi-trailer, offers a total cargo volume of 144 cubic meters—50% more than standard semi-trailers. After undergoing extensive testing and trials, it has been certified by MoRTH and ARAI for operation on the Nagpur-Bhiwandi route under Delhivery Ltd.

The Road Train is equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems, including an Electronic Braking System (EBS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), a 360-degree camera setup, and a self-steerable axle. Additional features like a dashboard load monitor, downhill cruise control, and a stretch brake enhance stability and control, ensuring safe and efficient long-haul transport.
