Sri Lanka crisis: PM Ranil Wickremesinghe says willing to resign, make way for all-party government
This comes after Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa demanded the resignation of the President and Prime Minister
Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday told the party leaders that he is willing to resign and make way for an all-party government to take over.
This comes after Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa demanded the resignation of the President and Prime Minister.
"No fake discussions. The President and the Prime Minister must resign immediately," Premadasa said in a statement.
Meanwhile, thousands of protesters broke through police barricades in Colombo and barged into the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's official residence today.
Protesters who climbed the walls of the President's House are now occupying it without damaging any property or indulging in acts of violence.
Video footage from inside the building showed hundreds of protesters packing into rooms and corridors, while hundreds also milled around the grounds outside.
Some video clips showed scores of people taking a dip in the presidential palace pool.
Rajapaksa, meanwhile, was moved out of his residence on Friday in anticipation of Saturday's protests.
Meanwhile, a video is going viral on social media in which suitcases are being loaded on to the Sri Lanka Navy Ship Gajabahu anchored at the Colombo Port. The visuals show three men carrying large suitcases onto the ship. Local media claims that the suitcases were of President Rajapaksa.
