Bangladesh HC Rejects ISKCON Ban Plea, Latter Dissociates Itself From Chinmoy Krishna Das

The High Court Division of Bangladesh's Supreme Court on Thursday (November 28) refused to impose ban on activities of Iskcon (International Society For Krishna Consciousness) in the country, said local media. A petition to ban Iskcon was made in the High Court Division (popularly called High Court) following death of a lawyer in a clash.

The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury pronounced the verdict.

Iskcon had earlier expelled Chinmoy Krishna Das who was arrested earlier this week and was slapped with sedition charges. Bangladeshi media has reported that the sedition charges were levelled against Das because he flew a religious flag above Bangladesh's national flag in a religious congregation in Bangladesh.

Das' arrest has triggered clashes a few days ago during which Saiful Islam, an assistant public prosecutor, was killed.

After the High Court's verdict Das took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and expressed happiness.

Earlier on Thursday, Iskcon again sought to distance itself from Das.

Situation in Bangladesh is volatile ever since former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina left her post and fled to India. The country has plunged into chaos with widespread chaos that is still hasn't fully abated.

Nobel Laureate Mohamed Yunus is currently heading a government. The government has received criticism for attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh including Hindus.

The Indian government has already conveyed its 'deep concern' to Yunus government.
