Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is on course for a historic return to power after nearly 25 years, securing a decisive mandate in the 13th general election of Bangladesh. The BNP-led coalition has crossed the crucial two-thirds majority mark, leading in 209 of the 300 parliamentary seats, according to latest reports. As per the latest figures, the BNP itself is leading in 165 seats, comfortably ahead of its rivals. The party’s closest challenger, Jamaat-E-Islami, is leading in 62 seats.
BNP chairperson Tarique Rahman has emerged as a central figure in the landslide, leading in both his constituencies, Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17. Senior party leader and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has also registered a commanding performance, securing a massive lead of nearly 2.5 lakh votes in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, reported Daily Star.
BNP Spokesperson Accuses Rivals Of Manipulating Poll Process
Celebrations broke out across several parts of the country as BNP supporters poured onto the streets, raising slogans and cheering the party’s resurgence. Addressing the media, BNP spokesperson and advisor to Tarique Rahman, Mahdi Amin, confirmed the party’s strong lead and hailed it as a mandate for change. However, he also accused rival parties of attempting to manipulate the electoral process through forceful rigging and other unfair practices.
In a statement, the BNP congratulated the people of Bangladesh after crossing the majority mark and declared victory, stating that it was preparing to form the next government. The party’s media cell said the results reflected the public’s desire for democratic restoration and political stability.
Vote counting is expected to conclude by around 11 am, election officials said. Early trends indicate a major political comeback for the family of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, with the BNP set to return to power after years in opposition.
With the numbers firmly in its favour, Tarique Rahman is now all set to take over as the newly elected Prime Minister, marking a major shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape after Sheikh Hasina's ouster.
