Beijing is currently hosting the second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games (WHRG), an event being billed as the world's first Olympic-style sporting competition built exclusively for humanoid robots. Running from August 22 to 26 at the National Speed Skating Oval, the Games have drawn robots that are now completing sprints faster than Usain Bolt's world record - turning what began as a novelty demonstration a year ago into a genuine marker of how fast humanoid robotics is advancing.

What exactly are the world humanoid robot games?

The WHRG is described by its organisers as the world's first comprehensive science and technology sports event with humanoid robots as the primary competitors. The Games are co-hosted by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, China Media Group, the World Robot Cooperation Organisation, and the RoboCup Asia-Pacific Confederation Board of Trustees, according to the event's official listing on RoboCup's website.

Robots compete across two broad categories - traditional sporting events such as track and field, football, martial arts, and gymnastics, and real-world scenario tasks such as hotel services, industrial assembly, medicine sorting, and emergency rescue simulations. The organisers describe the format as 'sports plus art plus application', designed to test not just physical athleticism but the practical, everyday capabilities robots would need to function alongside humans.

Why the event is being held?

The Games were conceived as a public stress test for humanoid robotics, a way to showcase and pressure-test how far the technology has come outside of controlled lab environments. China has positioned humanoid robotics as a strategic industry on par with semiconductors and electric vehicles, with the country's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) explicitly targeting mass deployment of humanoid robots in manufacturing, healthcare, and elderly care by the end of the decade. The first Games, held in August 2025, drew 280 teams and more than 500 robots across 26 events, and generated over 1.33 billion views on social media with coverage from outlets in more than 80 countries, according to organisers.

A massive jump in scale this year

The 2026 edition has expanded sharply. Registration figures put this year's Games at 666 teams and 2,056 robots from 16 countries across six continents, compared with 280 teams and roughly 500 robots at the inaugural event - a more than fourfold increase in robot participation. The number of events has also nearly doubled, to 51 events comprising 30 competitive sporting contests and 21 real-world scenario tasks, run across more than 1,300 individual matches over the five-day event.

The robots beating human world records

The clearest sign of how quickly the technology is advancing came in the sprint events. A humanoid robot named Tien Kung Ultra, built by Beijing-based robotics company X-Humanoid, won the large-group 400-metre final in 38.15 seconds - faster than the men's 400m world record of 43.03 seconds set by South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk at the 2016 Rio Olympics. For context, the winning 400m time at last year's inaugural Games was 1 minute 28.03 seconds, nearly 50 seconds slower, illustrating the pace of improvement over just one year.

In the small-group 400m final, X-Humanoid's other robot, Tien Kung Omni, also took gold, in 45.66 seconds, while running with an unusual gait- arms held near its face rather than swinging normally - which the company's motion control lead, Han Gang, reportedly said emerged spontaneously through the robot's reinforcement-learning training rather than being designed by engineers, as it reduced shoulder-joint strain over the distance.

On the 100-metre sprint, a humanoid robot completed the distance in 9.39 seconds during the formal competition, beating Usain Bolt's actual 100m world record of 9.58 seconds, set in Berlin in 2009. Separately, in a preparatory test event rather than the official competition, a robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, nicknamed 'Lightning', reportedly ran the 100m in 9.32 seconds, reaching a peak speed of around 14.5 metres per second.

Companies and teams taking part

The Games have drawn participation from a broad mix of Chinese and international robotics developers, universities, and research institutes. Organisers said 157 companies and 200 universities or research institutes were behind this year's registered teams, with the overwhelming majority, around 96 percent, representing Chinese entrants. Beyond X-Humanoid and Honor, prominent Chinese firms such as Unitree Robotics have been closely associated with the Games and the broader humanoid robotics push in the country, alongside teams from the United States, Germany, Japan, and a national squad from Brazil made up of five RoboCup teams. At the close of the first Games in 2025, organisers also announced the formation of the World Humanoid Robotics Games Federation to help govern future editions of the event.
