TCS Pune Claims Payroll Suspension Is 'Standard Procedure,' Offers Temporary Stay To Employee Sleeping On Footpath Outside Office

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has now issued a statement regarding the Pune-based employee who was sleeping on the footpath due to suspension of salary. TCS claims that payroll suspension is 'standard procedure' in the case of unauthorised absence. The viral incident has sparked widespread discussion across social media.

An employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has alleged that he was forced to live on a footpath outside the company’s office in Mumbai due to non-payment of dues. The protest adds to ongoing turbulence among TCS employees after the CEO confirmed that around 12,000 employees will be laid off over the course of the year.

Identified as Saurabh More, the employee has written a letter to TCS asking for payment of his dues. He reported back to the TCS Sahyadri Park, Pune office on July 29 after a short leave. His ID was rendered inactive in TCS systems and he was not given his salary for the month. In a meeting on July 30, HR had meekly told him, “hope you receive your salary on July 31”, but nothing was done.

Upon not receiving his dues, More informed HR that he has no money and is forced to live on the footpath outside the TCS office. Despite this, HR did not respond, and he continues to stay on the footpath since July 29.

TCS responded to this incident saying, "This is a case of unauthorised absence where the employee has been absent from the office. In accordance with standard procedure, payroll was suspended during this period. We have currently provided him with accommodation and are working to support him in resolving the matter in a fair and constructive manner." More has reported to work and requested reinstatement.

The post quickly gained traction online, with many users expressing concern.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will lay off 12,000 employees—its biggest job cut to date. CEO K. Krithivasan confirmed the layoffs are part of a restructuring under its AI-first strategy. TCS also introduced a limiting benching policy last month, mandating all staff to have at least 225 of billable days per year and limited bench time to less than 35 days.
