During a CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier between Uruguay and Bolivia at El Alto Stadium, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez was seen using an oxygen mask. However, the game, which ended in a 0-0 draw highlighted the extreme challenges posed by the high altitude of Bolivia’s national stadium, located 4,150 meters above sea level.

Why playing matches in Bolivia is a major problem?

El Alto stadium's high altitude frequently poses a significant obstacle for visiting teams. In the past, FIFA has even tried (in vain) to limit games played over 2,500 meters. A few years ago, Argentina captain Lionel Messi had to be taken off by La Albiceleste after he vomited on the field due to fatigue related to the high altitude.

El Alto Municipal Stadium opened only in 2017 and is considered a jewel in the Bolivian highlands. On its green grass, marked in white, is the phrase, “You play where you live.” The Oval-shaped stadium has a seating capacity for 24,000 spectators, which is smaller than the 40,000-seat Hernando Siles Stadium in La Paz.

What's next for Jose Gimenez?

Following the match, Gimenez will return to Atlético Madrid, where he will focus on their upcoming La Liga fixture against Espanyol. Atletico Madrid is currently sitting on third place in the LaLiga standings, behind Real Madrid and table-toppers Barcelona, as they fight to keep their title hopes alive.

Following the latest draw, Uruguay maintained their position in third place in the World Cup qualifiers standings, while Bolivia, despite their home advantage, remains in 8th place, well behind the top contenders. Argentina leads the group with 31 points, followed by Ecuador.
