Mumbai, August 12: Under the initiative of Skill Development Minister Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha and the guidance of Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the 'Olympicveer Khashaba Jadhav Paramparik Krida Mahakumbha' will begun on Wednesday (July 13) in Kurla, Mumbai.

Organised in memory of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar, the event aims to keep our culture and traditions alive, Minister Lodha stated. The ground of Jam Saheb Mukadam Government Industrial Training Institute in Kurla has been reserved exclusively for indigenous and traditional sports. During the same ceremony, the ground will be named and inaugurated as Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Indigenous Sports Ground.

When asked about the tournament, an official of Krida Bharti told The Free Press Journal:

"The games we organize are traditional. We need to make them more advanced. From district level to state level and to other states too. We have to ensure that our traditional games are being played in more and more states. All we have to do is plan on how to take them forward."

The Sports Mahakumbh will be inaugurated and the ground dedicated under the chairmanship of State Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare Shri Manikrao Kokate. Through a video message, the popular Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis will further boost the enthusiasm of the participating players. Adding special significance to the occasion will be the presence of Shri Ranjit Jadhav, son of Olympian Khashaba Jadhav. From August 13 to August 22, Mumbaikars will witness the thrill of traditional games.

Minister Lodha recalled that Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar’s contribution to the preservation of culture can never be forgotten. Preserving the cultural heritage she passed on is our duty. To bring Maharashtra’s traditional sports to the new generation, this Mahakumbh is being organised in the name of Olympian Khashaba Jadhav.

“Our traditional games are not just a form of entertainment, but also a part of our cultural heritage,” said Minister Lodha. “Over time, these games are becoming rare. It is time to introduce the younger generation to the brave games played in the era of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Through this Mahakumbh, traditional sports such as Lezim, Fugdi, Lagori, Viti Dandu, Pawankhind Race, arm wrestling, tug-of-war, wrestling, and Mallakhamb will be revived, he added. Minister Lodha also appealed to the public to participate in the Mahakumbh and help preserve the cultural heritage.

Through the organisation Kreeda Bharati, large-scale registrations have begun for the competition from across the Mumbai region. So far, more than 15,000 participants have registered for various games. Schools, ITIs, and colleges have also reached out to Kreeda Bharati.
