The Lalit Modi vs Sanjiv Goenka row has added a fresh twist to the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 controversy involving Rishabh Pant, with sharp criticism and social media reactions intensifying the debate around franchise-owner conduct.

Viral Pant–Goenka exchange sparks outrage

The controversy erupted after Lucknow Super Giants’ defeat to Delhi Capitals, when cameras captured an animated on-field exchange between Goenka and Pant. The clip quickly went viral, with many fans interpreting it as a public dressing-down of the captain.

The incident reignited criticism of Goenka’s past behaviour, with fans arguing that such discussions should remain private rather than unfold in front of cameras and spectators.

LSG clarification fails to convince fans

In response to the backlash, the franchise released a longer, “unfiltered” video, claiming the situation had been misrepresented and urging viewers not to jump to conclusions.

However, the move backfired online. Many netizens dismissed the clarification, with some even calling it a PR exercise and accusing the franchise of trying to control the narrative.

Lalit Modi’s explosive reaction

Amid the growing debate, Lalit Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) and launched a scathing attack, criticising the optics around the incident.

He wrote: “Completely empty stadium. That does not happen in an IPL game. I guarantee that. This is absurd. AI and PR machinery in overdrive it seems.” Modi also broadly criticised IPL franchise owners for publicly confronting players, suggesting such behaviour undermines professionalism and damages the league’s image.

The episode has once again highlighted the delicate balance between team ownership and player autonomy in the IPL. While passion and accountability are part of competitive sport, public confrontations, especially involving high-profile figures like Pant, often trigger larger debates about respect, leadership, and dressing-room culture.
