Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has once again spoken out on a global humanitarian issue, this time addressing the growing crisis in Gaza. The British driver took to social media on Saturday to express his deep anguish over the deaths of children from hunger and malnutrition in the war-torn region.
Lewis Hamilton talks about Gaza crisis
Sharing a powerful post by UNICEF ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire and immediate humanitarian access to Gaza. “We can no longer stay silent,” Hamilton wrote in a story post on Instagram.
"More than 100 children were killed in intensified strikes in Gaza during the first week of July, according to reports. The killing of children has continued every day since. Ceasefire now."
Further in his post, Hamilton expressed horror and heartbreak over the worsening conditions, particularly for children.
"It’s hard to find words to express the total devastation I feel seeing what is happening in Gaza. Children are starving while humanitarian organisations are unable to safely deliver people food, clean water, medical supplies – the most basic human needs. There is no justification for this."
He went on to criticise the inaction of global leaders and urged immediate intervention.
"The silence and lack of action from the international community will be judged by future generations. Every day that passes without allowing aid to safely reach Palestinians, and without a ceasefire, more lives are lost. Those in power must do everything they can to end this suffering, and they must do it now."
Details about current situation in Gaza
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the number of deaths caused by hunger and malnutrition in Gaza has reached 122 since the conflict began on October 7, 2023 among them 83 children. The blockade of the Gaza Strip, coupled with ongoing Israeli military operations, has resulted in severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. More than 59,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have reportedly been killed in the attacks.
