Sri Lanka booked their place in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2025 with a convincing six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in a crucial group stage match at Abu Dhabi. Chasing a target of 170 runs, the Sri Lankan side showed composure and control to reach the finish line with 8 balls to spare, joining Bangladesh as the two teams advancing from Group B.
Afghanistan, who were desperate to keep their campaign alive, struggled to post a competitive total. Despite Mohammad Nabi's late charge, they were pegged back by disciplined Sri Lankan bowling and some sharp fielding. Their innings ended at 169/8. Sri Lanka’s bowlers worked in tandem, with Nuwan Thushara and Dasun Shanaka striking at crucial intervals to prevent any sustained partnerships.
In reply, Sri Lanka never looked in real trouble. Opener Kusal Mendis set the tone early with a brisk start, while the middle order, ensured there were no hiccups in the chase. Afghanistan briefly threatened when they picked up a couple of wickets in the middle overs, but the target was too modest to create real scoreboard pressure.
With this win, Sri Lanka ended the group stage unbeaten and will now head into the Super 4 with momentum on their side. Afghanistan, meanwhile, crash out of the tournament, unable to match the consistency shown by their group rivals. Bangladesh also qualified for the Super 4.
