A Reddit user has penned an open letter to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune after getting frustrated over tampering of meters by auto-rickshaw drivers and cab drivers demanding arbitrary fares.
In a long post, he wrote, "In light of recent experiences and an increasing number of posts about fare scams across Pune—autos with tampered meters, cabs quoting arbitrary amounts, and little to no regulation—it’s time we, as citizens, come together and demand accountability. We all know how hard it is to earn a single rupee. Yet, we’re being overcharged daily with no clear system to rely on. This isn’t just about convenience anymore—it’s about fairness, safety and dignity. If we don’t raise our voices now, these practices will continue unchecked."
The user listed six points that should be brought to the RTO's attention. They are: only verified auto-rickshaws should be allowed to operate with meters; a 24/7 complaint hotline should be set up for fare tampering; strict penalties must be enforced for violations; fare tampering standards should be made public; cabs without meters should not charge metered fares; and the official meter fare website/app must be updated and made more user-friendly.
"The current tools are outdated and often inaccurate. Citizens deserve real-time, transparent fare breakdowns—including base fare, waiting charges, night fare, and distance slabs. We deserve a commuting system that works for us, not against us. Let’s organise, speak up, and take this up with the authorities in a unified and peaceful manner," said the user.
He said he plans to go to the RTO and raise these points. "If you care about your commuting, join me," he added.
