Pune: Tribal Development Department Launches 'Gurushala' Initiative to Enhance Education in Ashram Schools

In a bid to improve the quality of education in government-run ashram schools for Scheduled Tribe students, the Tribal Development Department has launched an innovative initiative, 'Gurushala', in collaboration with the Pratham Education Foundation, New Delhi. This initiative aims to foster a love for learning among tribal students and enhance their academic capabilities.  

Currently, the state operates 497 government ashram schools under the Tribal Development Department, educating approximately two lakh students. The 'Gurushala' initiative is a three-year programme (2024-25 to 2026-27) that includes a phased approach to evaluate students' academic levels and train teachers and superintendents to improve educational outcomes.  

Pratham Education Foundation will conduct this training, aiming to enlighten teachers about modern teaching methodologies and improve the learning experience for students.  

Phased implementation

1. Assessment phase: Students will undergo an evaluation to determine their academic levels.  

2. Capacity building for teachers: Training will be provided to teachers to enhance their teaching methods.  

3. Capacity building for superintendents: Superintendents will receive training to strengthen their roles in supporting the educational environment.  

‘Adarsh Shala’ competition

As part of 'Gurushala', an Adarsh Shala (Model School) competition was organised to encourage innovation among ashram school teachers. Out of 497 project submissions, 287 qualified for the next phase. These include:  

- 100 projects from Nashik Additional Commissionerate  

- 91 from Thane Commissionerate  

- 56 from Nagpur Commissionerate  

- 40 from Amravati Commissionerate  

Meanwhile, Nayana Gunde, Commissioner of the Department of Tribal Development said, “Gurushala will accelerate the teaching process for teachers and the learning process for students, making education more accessible and developing basic capabilities. This initiative will significantly improve the quality of education in ashram schools."
