Baramati, Indapur, and Daund tehsils in Pune district were hit by unusually heavy rain on Sunday, leading to the deployment of two specialised NDRF teams after an urgent request from the district collector. This May rainfall is the highest these areas have seen in the past 50 years.

Nira Canal Breach

A breach in the left canal of the Nira river has led to flooding in both residential and agricultural areas. In some parts, water has even reached roadways, disrupting transport and daily life.

Baramati tehsil in Pune district witnessed intense rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging and flooding in several areas. Many residents in Jalochi and Katewadi were left stranded due to rising rainwater levels. In one incident, a man named Rupesh Singh was swept away along with his bike in Jalochi but was safely rescued by the Baramati Fire Department and the MIDC Fire Department. In Katewadi, seven members of a single family were trapped inside their home and were also successfully rescued.

The heavy downpour caused water to enter over 150 homes in the Baramati Municipal Council limits. According to the local administration, 19 houses suffered partial damage due to the flooding.

Member of Parliament Sunetra Pawar visited the affected areas and took stock of the situation. “Today, I personally inspected the rain-hit locations. All officers and their teams in the taluka were on high alert. After receiving distress calls from different areas, I coordinated with officials and instructed them to ensure immediate support. The administration promptly rescued people trapped in floodwaters and made arrangements for their shelter and basic needs. Relief and damage assessment work is ongoing. Citizens have been advised not to step out unless absolutely necessary for their safety,” she said.

The rain, which has intensified over the past three to four days, has affected several parts of Baramati, as well as Daund and Indapur talukas. Streams and drains have overflowed in many places.

Local leader Yugendra Pawar urged residents to remain cautious. “I request everyone in Baramati taluka to take necessary precautions in the coming days. Please avoid stepping out unless it is essential. Our safety is in our own hands,” he appealed.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited the canal breach site in the Baramati-Kanheri Katewadi area and interacted with affected farmers and villagers from Kanheri Forest, Kanheri village, Pimpli, Katewadi, and Dhekalwadi. He listened to their concerns and reviewed the damage firsthand.

In total, eight citizens—seven from Katewadi and one from Baramati city—were evacuated to safety following the canal breach. The administration has urged people to stay away from riverbeds and canal areas, avoid spreading or believing in rumours, and cooperate fully with rescue and relief teams.
