The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) water supply department continues to implement water cuts in the city’s southern parts despite enough storage in the reservoirs.
The civic body had earlier announced a water cut, but after getting slammed by citizens, Municipal Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale withdrew the decision. However, the residents of South Pune are still not receiving water daily and are provided water on alternate days as officials cite inadequate pipeline capacity.
The southern part of Pune currently receives 16 MLD daily from the Vadgaon water centre. This is distributed across Katraj, Kondhwa, Sinhagad, Dhankawadi, Yewalewadi and parts of Bibwewadi. Given the growing population, authorities claim an alternate-day supply is necessary to ensure equitable distribution.
The affected areas include Katraj-Kondhwa Road, Sukhsagar Nagar, Gokul Nagar, Shiv Shambho Nagar, Swami Samarth Nagar, Sai Nagar, Katraj, and Santosh Nagar.
The PMC officials said, "Water pressure issues have necessitated a limited supply. Also, because we have a limited network of pipelines, daily distribution isn't feasible under current circumstances."
Under Pune’s equal water distribution project, 12 storage tanks were planned for South Pune, yet only two are operational. The non-functional and inadequate pipeline capacity is further creating problems for the residents.
The civic body’s plans include the construction of 65 storage tanks citywide, with 11–12 tanks designated for South Pune. While some structures are complete, others remain delayed due to pending land acquisition issues.
