Nashik: High-Tech Disaster Management System Planned Ahead Of Simhastha Kumbh

Nashik: In view of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the increasing intensity of natural disasters, and the challenges posed by climate change,

Nashik district is set to establish a technology-driven, advanced disaster management system. Key decisions were taken during a high-level meeting chaired by District Collector Ayush Prasad, attended by representatives from MITRA, the World Bank, and the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department. The meeting focused on setting up a state-of-the-art District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC), along with Mobile DEOCs, Field DEOCs, a digital coordination system, and a smart disaster management framework for the Kumbh Mela.

Under MITRA's Maharashtra Resilience and Disaster Project (MRDP), a modern DEOC will be established in Nashik, with completion targeted by December 2026. The centre will enable faster, coordinated, and technology-enabled decision-making during emergencies by integrating multiple government departments.

To strengthen disaster preparedness, the administration has decided to enhance interdepartmental convergence, develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for DEOC operations, and integrate advanced digital platforms such as IDRN, ICT, and IEMS. This will facilitate real-time management of manpower, equipment, resources, and emergency response.

A Mobile DEOC will be deployed to support on-site decision-making during emergencies, while a Field DEOC will be established at Trimbakeshwar to ensure rapid local response during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.

The meeting also emphasised deploying advanced scientific instruments to monitor seismic activity in the talukas of Surgana, Dindori, Kalwan, and Peth. Discussions were also held on promoting the use of earthquake-resistant local construction materials under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

To ensure the safety of millions of pilgrims during the Kumbh Mela, the administration will integrate the India Meteorological Department (IMD) weather forecasting API into its disaster management system. Real-time weather updates will improve crowd management, emergency planning, and disaster preparedness.

District Collector Ayush Prasad said, "The district administration is committed to strengthening Nashik's disaster management system through modern technology, effective coordination, and proactive preparedness. Our highest priority is to minimise the loss of life and property during emergencies."

The meeting was attended by Anup Karanth (World Bank), Hosalikar and Shrinath (MITRA PMU), Kanchan Sabnis, Ankit Mohabansi, Rohit Kusalkar, Amalnath Kavuluru (PMTC R&R) and officials from various departments.
